Sonya M. Sloan, MD, aka “#orthodoc,” is a woman on the rise in a male dominated field. Dr. Sloan prefers to be a traveling Orthopedic Surgeon and is certified to practice in over five states. She concentrates on helping her patients understand their problem and get the results they want. Her love is science, but her passion is in helping others.

Dr. Sloan is a native of Denison, Texas and she earned her undergraduate degree in Chemistry at Texas Tech University. In 1992, she gained national attention as the first African-American Homecoming Queen at Texas Tech University. She received her Medical Doctor degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) at Galveston. Upon graduation from UTMB, Dr. Sloan accepted a residency position in surgery at Baylor College of Medicine. She was the first ever African-American female surgical resident in the history of Baylor College of Medicine.

After a year of surgical residency, Dr. Sloan became the first African-American female Orthopedic Surgical resident at Baylor College of Medicine. She has completed several research projects in Orthopedic Sports Medicine (published) and a joint venture with NASA, Johnson Space Center.

In 1992, Dr. Sloan began her first entrepreneur venture with “Not Just Coffee” and later established two nonprofits called AAA-CP (African American Association for Christian Physicians) and ME & WE, Inc. (Motivating & Empowering Women to Excel), and these organizations reach more than 5,000 women daily.

Due to her passion to impact lives beyond the hospital walls, Dr. Sloan is a highly sought after public speaker for health awareness and motivational speaker. She currently serves on the Houston School Board Committee called School Health Awareness Committee (SHAC) and Dairy Max to help youth gain the proper daily nutrition. She is currently working on two books to assist medical professionals and an autobiography book that will disclose her personal failures as a successful doctor. Both books are expected to be released in 2015.

Aside from surgical and technical expertise, Dr. Sloan was recently chosen for the “Top 25 Women” in Houston and featured in Essence Magazine aside from many other publications. She is a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Mary Susan Moore – Black Female Physicians and multiple academic societies. Dr. Sloan is the First Lady of “The Luke Church” in Humble, TX, where she currently is the servant leader for The Luke Women’s Ministry.

Beyond all her success, she’s most proud of her family. She and her husband, Reverend Dr. Timothy Sloan, are raising two beautiful daughters, Sarah and Soren, and one son, Timothy.
