Daphane Carter lives by the famous Shirley Chisholm quote: “If they don’t give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair.” But Carter has done more than spend her career pulling up a chair; she’s built the table — creating opportunities, breaking barriers, and ensuring others have a place to thrive.
In September 2023, she made history as the first Black female Executive Director of Genesys Works Houston, bringing a bold vision for expanding access, fostering talent, and driving impact. With over two decades of expertise in organizational effectiveness, leadership development, and business transformation, she is committed to closing opportunity gaps and ensuring young professionals gain the mentorship, resources, and skills needed to excel in competitive career fields.
Her career spans corporate and academic sectors, where she has witnessed the transformative power of leadership training and workforce development. Her passion for economic equity and access to opportunity aligns seamlessly with Genesys Works’ mission to provide meaningful work experiences that lead to lifelong success.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Carter is a passionate advocate for women’s health, youth advancement, and community empowerment. As a breast cancer survivor, she actively supports Susan G. Komen, working to increase awareness and expand access to mammograms in underserved communities. She is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated; The Links, Incorporated; Women of the Vine and Spirits; and the Women’s Leadership Council—organizations dedicated to service, leadership, and the advancement of Black professionals. Carter also lends her expertise as a board member for two national nonprofits.
Her drive to create a lasting impact extends beyond nonprofit leadership. As co-founder of Daphane Limoncello, she and her best friend became the first Black women in the U.S. to own a citrus-based liqueur brand. What started as a gathering of friends sharing laughter and life’s moments evolved into an award-winning brand now sold in major retailers across five states. As an entrepreneur, she is building a legacy of ownership and innovation for her daughters.
Carter’s leadership has earned recognition from multiple organizations, including the Houston Business Journal’s Women Who Mean Business Award (2021) and the Invest & Ivy Educational and Charitable Foundation of Houston (2024 Honoree).
When she’s not gardening, curating cocktails, or hosting the perfect gathering, she’s planting seeds of opportunity and watching individuals flourish in their careers. Just as she finds joy in cultivating vibrant gardens and creating welcoming spaces for friends, she takes pride in helping people grow, connect, and thrive. Through every initiative, mentorship, and opportunity she creates, Carter proves what’s possible when vision meets action.
She lives in Missouri City with her husband, Stephen Carter, and their daughters, continuing to nurture both her community and the legacy she is building.
