Farida Abjani

Honoree 2016, If you’ve cared for any cause at all since you were born, you have probably heard of, seen, or met with Farida Abjani. This is especially true, if you live in Houston. Having a true passion for everyone receiving the quality healthcare that they deserve, she is the Co-Founder and CEO of Shining Nightingale, Inc.

Shining Nightingale, Inc. is primarily engaged in providing skilled nursing services and other therapeutic services, such as physical therapy, speech-language pathology services, or occupational therapy, medical social services, and home health aide services. It has policies established by a professional group associated with the agency to govern the services.  Under Farida’s leadership, this agency meets and exceeds expectations from the Secretary of Health and Human Services that are necessary for the health and safety of their patients.

From her experience in child education in developing countries to supporting the advancement of young women in Texas, Farida is intimately involved with several charities.  Not only has she served on the board of several charities, but she has also brought in hundreds and thousands of fundraising dollars for charities she has been associated with.

Her list of community involvement includes but is not limited to:

  • Developments in Literacy USA – Houston Chapter
  • Fort Bend Women’s Center
  • Alliance for Multicultural Community Services
  • American Pakistan Foundation
  • Texas Executive Women

She credits her nursing education and experience and her father’s teachings for her being the woman she is today.  She remembers as a child, her father allowing her to keep only 75 percent of her pocket money, because the remaining 25 percent had to be given to charity (of her choice).  That teaching forms the basis of everything she does, even today. For instance, despite having a thriving for-profit hospice firm in Houston, she has started a foundation where she can care for those with no insurance coverage. Because when it comes to care, she doesn’t care who it is.

Farida graduated from AKUSON with a Diploma in Nursing in 1997, and she holds a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from Grand Canyon University. During her career, she worked in ICU, cardiac ICU, PACU, and orthopedic PACU.  The one cause that is particularly close to her heart is taking care of the emotional needs of chronically and terminally ill patients and their caregivers.

Farida was recently named “IT Girl 2016” by the Houston Chronicle, which recognized her for her successful career and philanthropic efforts.
