Dr. Carolyn Evans- Shabazz

Dr. Carolyn Evans-Shabazz is a native Houstonian from Third Ward, Texas, and a proud graduate of Jack Yates High School. She is a graduate of Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia, with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science.  She has a Master’s degree in Psychology and a Doctorate of Education (Counselor Education) from Texas Southern University.  Although she wears many hats, she had a long career working as a teacher and a Lead Evaluation Specialist before retiring from the Houston Independent School District in 2009.  As an Executive Committee member of the NAACP-Houston Branch, and in particular as chairwoman of the Education Committee, she stays very active in the community addressing issues to bring about equality for all people. She has been a realtor in Houston for over twenty years.  She is a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and a grief facilitator at Bo’s Place.  Finally, Dr. Evans-Shabazz is a member of the Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church.

Dr. Evans-Shabazz is the Houston Community College Trustee serving District IV and serves as the board secretary.  Her mantra is “If I can help somebody as I pass along this way, then my living will not be in vain” and thus feels that public service is her calling.  Her goals for her district are to provide information, as well as seek resources for her constituents regarding accessing the vast opportunities available at the college.  She feels that education is the key to changing the circumstances of entire families.  Statistically, parents that are gainfully employed tend to engage in the educational process of their children. She further feels that you must bring the college to the community and not always rely on potential students to seek out the college.  She seeks to provide avenues for this outreach and intends to engage with community organizations and job fair venues to encourage enrollment of people from all walks of life.

Dr. Evans-Shabazz’s family hails from Prairie View, Texas, as her grandfather was the first president of the university.  Her parents were the late Edward B. “Doc” Evans, the coach for many years of the mighty Jack Yates lion’s basketball team and the late Catherine Williams Evans, a teacher in the Houston Independent School District.  She is the second child and has four siblings, Bert, Cathy, Charlotte, and Marc.  She is married to Malik Shabazz, a local landscape design business owner.
