Martha Castex-Tatum

On May 5, 2018, Martha Castex-Tatum won the special election to fulfill the unexpired term of the late Houston City Council Member Larry Green representing District K, which stretches across southwest Houston into Fort Bend County. A staunch community advocate, Council Member Castex-Tatum began her career in public service as the first African-American female to serve on the San Marcos, TX city council. During her term, she was elected by her colleagues to serve as Deputy Mayor Pro Tem. January 2020 began her first full four-year term as a Council Member of the district in which she was raised. Council Member Castex-Tatum was unanimously elected by Mayor Sylvester Turner and her City Council colleagues to serve as the City of Houston’s Vice Mayor Pro-Tem.

Castex-Tatum currently serves as the chairperson of the Economic Development committee and is a member of the Budget and Fiscal Affairs, Ethics Elections and Council Governance, Housing and Community Affairs, Regulations and Neighborhood Affairs, and Transportation Technology and Infrastructure city council committees.

Council Member Martha Castex-Tatum is the current president of the Texas Municipal League, which provides a variety of services to over 1,150 member cities. Council Member Castex-Tatum’s passion is public service and she strives every day to restore people’s faith in government.

Martha Castex-Tatum is a graduate of Leadership Houston Class XXXVI. She is a life member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., where she has been active for over 31 years. She earned her Master’s of Public Administration and Bachelor’s of Business Administration from Southwest Texas State University (now, Texas State University). She is the mother of one son, Jacob Paul Tatum.
