Lesley Briones

Commissioner Lesley Briones has dedicated her life to advancing the American Dream because she has lived it. A proud Latina and native Texan, she was raised on the U.S.-Mexico border in Laredo by two teachers who instilled in her the values of hard work and service to others.

Briones graduated with honors from Harvard University. Her journey from the border to the Ivy League was fueled by a deep belief in the power of education — not just to change one life but to lift up entire communities.

After college, she returned home to South Texas to teach students in underserved schools. Moved by the injustices her students faced, she decided to pursue a law degree at Yale University to become a stronger advocate for systemic change. Between classes, she provided pro bono legal support to survivors of domestic abuse and counseled juvenile offenders.

After graduating from law school in 2007, Briones accepted a position at Vinson & Elkins LLP in Houston and quickly fell in love with the grit, energy, and possibility that define the city she now calls home. She later served as General Counsel and Chief Operating Officer of the Laura & John Arnold Foundation.

Briones then became judge of Harris County Civil Court at Law No. 4, where she served with distinction and a commitment to upholding the law with impartiality. She earned the highest ratings in the 2019 and 2020 Houston Bar Association Judicial Polls.

In 2022, Commissioner Briones was elected to represent Precinct 4 on Harris County Commissioners Court, becoming the first woman to hold this position and the first mother elected in her own right to the Court. She brings her diverse experiences — as a teacher, attorney, judge, parent, and nonprofit leader — to serve over 1.2 million residents and fight for a stronger, safer, and more prosperous Harris County.

Briones’ leadership has earned widespread recognition. In 2023, she was named one of Houston Woman Magazine’s 50 Most Influential Women, received the Trailblazer of the Year Award from the Hispanic Bar Association, and earned the Eleanor Tinsley Ally of the Year Award from the Houston LGBTQ+ Political Caucus. In 2024, she was honored with the Women of Influence Award from the National Council of Jewish Women, named Pride Houston’s Ally Grand Marshal, and received the Houston Bar Association President’s Award for Outstanding Service. In 2025, she was named Woman of the Year by WTS Houston and presented with the Breaking Barriers award by Run Sister Run.

Briones and her husband, Adán, live in Houston with their three daughters and worship at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.
