Grayle Tully James

Trustee, Fort Bend Independent School District
Grayle James received her Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, and her Secondary Education teaching credentials in mathematics and physical sciences from California State University, Bakersfield. When living in California, she taught high school chemistry and physics for several years before moving to Texas in 1997.
Once in Texas, Grayle became active in several volunteer organizations that focused on serving children. These organizations included the Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council, the Junior League of Houston, the ministries of Christ United Methodist Church, Sugar Land, and the Sugar Land Girls Softball Association. The public schools in Fort Bend ISD were also a primary focus of Grayle’s volunteer work. She volunteered in over a dozen schools in the district, holding leadership roles for PTAs, PTOs and Booster Clubs serving grades K-12. She also served on several district level policy and planning committees. Grayle is active in her sorority, Gamma Phi Beta, where she has served in both regional and national leadership roles. Currently, Grayle serves on the Board of Directors of Fort Bend Cares which is a nonprofit charitable foundation that helps meet the needs of underserved children in Fort Bend County.
In May 2012, Grayle was elected to Position 2 of the Fort Bend ISD Board of Trustees and then re-elected in May 2015 and May 2018. Grayle served two consecutive years as President of the Board of Trustees and one year as the Assistant Secretary. Grayle currently serves as the Chair of the Vision and Planning Committee for the school district as well as Chair of the district’s Policy Committee. Grayle is a Director for the Gulf Coast Area Association of School Boards. She also serves the region as the Vice President of Go Public for the Gulf Coast region, where she was a founding member.
Grayle has been married to her husband, David, for 33 years. They have lived in several cities throughout both California and Texas. They also lived in Europe for several years. They moved to the Houston area in 1997 and have lived here for over 20 years. They have three grown children, who have all graduated from Fort Bend ISD schools.
In her spare time, Grayle enjoys outdoor activities such as water skiing, snow skiing, golf, and hiking. If it is a rainy day, she can be found quilting or reading.
