Rhonda Skillern-Jones

Rhonda Skillern-Jones was elected to the Board of Education in 2011. She was sworn in as Trustee in January 2012. She served as board secretary in 2012 and 2013 and First Vice President in 2014. She also represents the Houston Independent School District (HISD) on the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) Board of Directors.

Skillern-Jones is constantly recognized for her community and district efforts that are enhancing the lives of Houston children and citizens. She has received the Top 50 Black P&E 2015 Community Hero Award from d-mars.com and received other countless achievement awards and honors. Skillern-Jones holds membership in several civic and community organizations, including Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.

Skillern-Jones has a strong faith in God and cites her parents as her heroes and role models. She served HISD in a volunteer capacity for 20 years before joining the school board. She has a passion for education and children, and she believes that all children deserve an equitable and quality education for a fair start in achieving their life goals.

It is her goal to see that every child in HISD has access to superior education and receives the best tools and support possible. She continues to fight for the community and sees to it that all of the community’s concerns are addressed respectfully.

Skillern-Jones is a wife and mother of five children. She earned both a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s degree in clinical sociology from Texas Southern University.
