Mayra Moreno

Mayra Moreno was born in Guanajuato, Mexico before immigrating to Houston as a child. She was raised in the city’s historic East End.

Since October 2015, Moreno has been a News Anchor and distinctive presence on Houston’s News Leader, KTRK ABC13. Known for her calm demeanor and heartfelt storytelling, she brings bilingual fluency — Spanish and English — to the news desk in a way that deeply resonates with the city’s diverse audience and large Latino population.

Her journey with journalism began in the Rio Grande Valley at KRGV-TV in Weslaco, where she tackled a wide range of stories from border crime issues to hurricane coverage. There, Moreno honed her craft and made meaningful connections with local communities.

Moreno’s first stint in her hometown came when she joined KIAH-TV’s CW 39 as a fill-in anchor and reporter. One of her most impactful early moments came in 2009, when she was among the journalists reporting live from the scene of the aftermath of the Fort Hood shooting.

In 2011, she moved to San Antonio’s KENS 5, spending four years as weekend anchor and reporter. Her investigative work that exposed the backlog issues in the city’s DWI no-refusal program and court system earned her a Lone Star Emmy nomination.

Since returning to Houston, Moreno has been living her lifelong dream of working in her hometown. She continues to report from the front lines during the city’s most critical moments. In 2018, she helped launch the very first 3 p.m. newscast in Texas. She has become a Houston news staple for her extensive coverage of major weather events, breaking news, and community-driven stories. She reported on the devastation of Hurricane Harvey as floodwaters overwhelmed the city, and she field-anchored live the day after a violent tornado tore through Pasadena in 2023. Her committed, sincere presence in times of crisis has helped deliver both critical information and comfort to viewers.

Moreno earned her journalism and Spanish degrees from the University of Houston, graduating magna cum laude.

Off-air, Moreno is an active community leader — making speaking appearances at schools to emphasize the importance of education and emceeing events throughout the city. She currently serves as president of the Houston Association of Hispanic Media Professionals (HAHMP), an organization that supports and uplifts the next generation of Latino journalists through scholarships, mentorship, and community involvement.

In June 2025, she took a public stance after receiving backlash for her bilingual sign-off, calling it “an example of racism Latino journalists continue to face.” She stated she won’t apologize for being “bilingual, bicultural, and unapologetically me.”

Mayra Moreno continues to carry her community’s stories with professionalism, passion, and pride — anchoring each broadcast with authenticity and heart.
