Carol Alvarado

State Representative Carol Alvarado is a native Houstonian and a lifetime resident of Houston’s East End. Before being elected to the State House she served on the Houston City Council from 2002-2008 and as Mayor ProTem from 2004-2006.

Rep. Alvarado is a tireless fighter for policies that focus on strengthening overall quality of life. She has passed or authored bills that require structured physical activity for Pre-K students in schools all day, limit the use of sugary drinks in public schools, increase career and technology education funding, and freeze tuition at public colleges and universities. She also joint authored a bill that would have eliminated secondhand smoke in most public workplaces. While on Houston City Council, Rep. Alvarado sponsored a similar law that earned unanimous approval among her colleagues.

Rep. Alvarado was recently appointed Co-Chair of the Transparency in State Agency Operations committee, and serves as the Vice-Chair of the Urban Affairs committee, and as a member of the influential House Calendars and Special Purpose Districts committees.

Rev. Alvarado’s commitment to public service extends well beyond elected office. She is actively involved in several charitable endeavors, including collecting women’s clothing for Dress for Success, raising money to improve Houston’s parks, and traveling across Texas on a bicycle with the Rise Across Texas Challenge, an 850-mile trek to awareness for the Rise Schools, which serve children with developmental disabilities. She currently serves as a board member for the Sunshine Kids Foundation, Unity Bank and the Houston Club.

Rev. Alvarado is a sole proprietor for CA Consulting and previously worked for Houston Mayor Lee P. Brown, as a consultant in economic and community development for East End neighborhoods, and for Congressman Gene Green. She holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and a Master’s in Business Administration from The University of Houston.
