Honoree 2016, Denise Castillo-Rhodes was appointed Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Texas Medical Center on December 1, 2008.  In this position, she is responsible for accounting, finance, billing and collections, tax compliance and investments.

Denise serves as Chair of the Audit and Finance Committee of Texas Medical Center Central Heating and Cooling Services Cooperative Corporation (“TECO”) and on its Executive Committee.  She also serves on the Audit and Finance Committee of the Houston Academy of Medicine-Texas Medical Center Library, a Texas Medical Center Member Institution.

In addition to her role as CFO of Texas Medical Center, Denise serves in executive leadership roles with numerous nonprofit charitable organizations.  Denise serves on the Board of Directors and is Chair of the Finance and Audit Committee of the University of St. Thomas, in Houston.  She is the Treasurer of the Board of Directors and Chair of the Audit and Finance Committee of Medical Bridges, an organization that recovers surplus medical supplies and equipment and distributes them to hospitals, clinics, and healthcare providers in developing countries.  She served as the 2015 Chair of the Greater Houston Women’s Chamber of Commerce.  She is a member of the Executive Committee of the Greater Houston Partnership’s Executive Women’s Partnership (EWP) and Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA). She is on the Board of Directors of the American Red Cross Greater Houston Area Chapter and the 2015-2016 Chair of the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women campaign.  Denise serves on the finance committee of the Post Oak Montessori School in Houston.  Denise also serves on the Board of Directors of the Houston Better Business Bureau and is an alumna of the Center for Houston’s Future’s Spring 2012 Business/Civic Leadership Forum.  She was recently asked to serve as a member of the Greater Houston Storm Relief Fund Oversight Committee established by the Mayor to accept donations to aid storm victims and relief organizations suffering from this year’s disaster.

In 2015, Denise was named as one of the 50 Most Influential Women in Houston.  In 2016, Denise was invited to join the International Women’s Forum.  Denise was awarded Businesswomen of the Year in the nonprofit category at the 2016 Houston Business Journal Women Who Mean Business awards event.  The Greater Houston Women’s Chamber of Commerce 2016 No Limits Conference for Women honored Denise as a Breakthrough Woman.

In addition to this volunteer work, Denise also devotes time to various humanitarian causes, which have included visits to Ghana and Guatemala, where she has helped build a medical clinic and has assisted physicians and nurses who provide medical services to residents of these underdeveloped regions.

Denise holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from The University of Texas at El Paso and a Master of Business Administration from the University of St. Thomas. She is a certified public accountant and is a member of the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants and American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

Prior to joining Texas Medical Center, Denise was the Controller at Nabisco’s Houston manufacturing facility where she held various positions and traveled throughout the United States to other sister Nabisco facilities, as well as corporate headquarters to provide guidance and assistance on numerous projects.  Prior to Nabisco, she worked in the Tax Department of the international public accounting firm of Ernst & Young LLP.

Denise and her husband are the proud parents of their son, Jeff, and their 115 pound Newfoundland dog, Wilson.
