Karla Cisneros

Karla Cisneros is dedicated to serving her constituents as the City of Houston’s District H City Council Member, representing historic neighborhoods to the north and to the east of downtown Houston. In addition to chairing the City Council Economic Development Subcommittee on Education, she also is the Vice Chair of the City Council Transportation, Technology and Infrastructure Committee.

The Council Member’s primary focus of improving educational opportunities to support a flourishing workforce is evidenced by her investment in parks, libraries, after school and summer enrichment programs, and improving the quality of early childcare centers. Council Member Cisneros has also led initiatives to promote spay/neuter efforts and bring awareness to the pet overpopulation problem; address illegal dumping through an education campaign, hidden cameras, and creative sentencing for violators; advocate and secure funding for sidewalk, street and mobility improvements that create safer environment; and support opportunities for increasing public art in District H neighborhoods.

Recovering from Hurricane Harvey has been particularly challenging for some District H neighborhoods who were severely impacted by the storm. Council Member Cisneros continues to collaborate with resource providers and support residents still in recovery. Resource fairs, block walking, and canvassing efforts to provide assistance and information are on-going.

A Houston resident since 1980, Cisneros has spent her adult life improving and increasing opportunities for young people. Cisneros graduated from the University of Virginia and then later earned a Master’s Degree from Rice University. She served for six years on the HISD Board of Education, including serving as Board President, before returning to school to become a certified elementary school teacher through the University of Houston-Downtown.

As an HISD teacher at Northline and Harvard Elementary schools, Cisneros taught and helped usher children through their lives. In working as a classroom teacher, a science teacher, a reading interventionist, and a dyslexia teacher, she came to understand that the development, health, and success of children is profoundly affected by the quality of life in their neighborhood. The chance to influence and correct the disparity present in many District H neighborhoods is why Cisneros sought a position on City Council. She was elected to Houston City Council in 2015 to represent and serve the people of District H.
