As chief executive officer for Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council, Mary Vitek is responsible for one of the largest Girl Scout councils in the nation, which serves approximately 38,000 girls and 17,000 adults across 26 counties in Southeast Texas. She is responsible for managing a $19 million budget, advising a 34-member board of directors, and maintaining relationships with key constituents in the community.

Mary has been employed with the council since 1994, overseeing the Finance and Fund Development functions before being named CEO in 1998. During her tenure, the council has reached several milestones, including completion of two capital campaigns totaling over $17 million to improve the opportunities available to girls, forming an endowment to ensure the long-term sustainability of Girl Scouts, opening the Program Place for Girls and Goodykoontz Museum of Girl Scout History, completing a council merger, and hosting the 2011 National Council Session/52nd Convention of GSUSA, an event that launched a year-long celebration of the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouting in the U.S.

Prior to joining Girl Scouts, Mary was an audit senior manager at KPMG. She attended Sam Houston State University, where she graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Business Administration and was named Outstanding Accounting Graduate. She became a certified public accountant in 1988 and is a member of Sam Houston State University’s College of Business Administration Advisory Board, the United Way of Greater Houston Women’s Initiative, the Executive Women’s Partnership Committee of the Greater Houston Partnership, Leadership Houston and American Leadership Forum. She is past president of the United Way of Greater Houston Agency Executives Association and has served on the United Way of Greater Houston Board of Trustees.

Mary has been recognized as one of five Outstanding Young Houstonians by the Houston Junior Chamber, one of five Outstanding Young Texans by the Texas Junior Chamber, and one of Houston’s 50 Most Influential Women by Houston Woman Magazine. In addition, Mary was inducted into the Greater Houston Women’s Hall of Fame in 2011 by the Greater Houston Women’s Chamber of Commerce and was honored as Outstanding Non-Profit CEO of the Year in 2016 by the Houston Business Journal.

Mary and her husband Mike have an adult daughter, Molly, who is a Gold Award Girl Scout and a son-in-law, Will, who is an Eagle Scout.
