Sehba Ali is the CEO and Superintendent of KIPP Houston Public Schools. KIPP Houston’s goal is to ensure students are prepared for success in college and have the knowledge, skills, and character to lead a choice-filled life. Consisting of 26 schools serving 13,500 students in grades pre-k through 12th grade, KIPP Houston has an annual operating budget of over $140 million dollars and over 1,550 staff members. Over ninety percent of families qualify for free/reduced lunch. Currently, KIPP Houston’s college graduation rate is six times the average for low-income students nationally.
Prior to joining KIPP Houston Public Schools, Mrs. Ali served as Chief Academic Officer at KIPP Bay Area Schools, where she was responsible for the academic performance of the region’s seven schools. Sehba Ali founded KIPP Heartwood Academy middle school in San Jose, CA in 2004, which has consistently been rated as one of the highest performing middle schools in California and is a nationally recognized Blue Ribbon School.
Mrs. Ali earned her B.A. in English and Psychology from UC Berkeley and her Masters from Stanford University. She received training from the KIPP School Leadership Program, including study at the Haas School of Business, and participated in the Pahara-Aspen Education Fellowship. She is currently participating in the Broad Academy. She began her career as a middle school English teacher in Houston, Texas, with Teach For America.
She has served on the KIPP Foundation Board of Directors, the California Charter School Association Member Council, and Rocketship Education’s Board of Directors. She currently serves on the boards of Legacy Community Health Services, the Connect Community, and the Post Oak School. Mrs. Ali is the proud mother of three children ages 8, 6, and 4 years.
