Selina Ahmed

Selina Ahmed was born in Bangladesh. In 1973, Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas, conferred upon her a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Human Nutrition.

Since August of 1975, she has taught Nutrition as an Associate Professor at Texas Southern University in the Department of Human Services and Consumer Sciences. She has also served as an Administrative Clinical Dietitian for Methodist Hospital and as a Research Fellow in the area of Space Nutrition at NASA Johnson Space Center. Dr Ahmed’s other community and professional services include serving as President of the Bangladesh Association of Houston and working with former Congressman Mickey Leland to develop a Hunger Relief Program for Bangladesh. Dr. Ahmed has also received several nominations and awards in the Houston Peace Network for the Lifetime Service/Outstanding Local Person at the Fourth Annual Peace and Justice Award Event. She has also received the Texas Southern University National Achievement Award (1993-1994) for her exceptional work in education and humanitarian service, which earned her recognition from former Texas Governor Ann Richards and former Houston Mayor Bob Lanier.

Selina Ahmed served as the Interim Director of the Mickey Leland Center on World Hunger and Peace at Texas Southern University for four years and she is on the advisory board of the institute of International Education, Houston Area Model United Nations and Planned Parenthood.  She founded the Annual Childhood Obesity Conference in the Human Services and Consumer Services department at Texas Southern University 12 years ago.  She currently serves on the board for the Asia Society Texas Center.  In this capacity, she continues her work to serve the community through education about issues of hunger, peace and refugees. She is also a board member with Kid-Care, an organization that provides meals for underprivileged children. She has worked to bring world leaders in the peace movement to Texas Southern University and Houston, such as the Dalai Lama and Dr. Nafis Sadik. Dr. Ahmed hopes to educate her community and the world about hunger and peace issues, and she dedicates her life to finding solutions to the problems of hunger, homelessness and inadequate health care.

Along with her accomplishments, as a community leader, program consultant, professor and a researcher, the most noted and awarding of all, has been the international fare and ethnicity given to foods for future long Duration Missions in Space.
