Marvalette Hunter

Mayor’s Chief of Staff, City of Houston
Marvalette Hunter is Chief of Staff for the Honorable Mayor Sylvester Turner, Mayor of the City of Houston, Texas. As the Mayor’s chief administrator and policy advisor, Hunter plans, manages and directs the administrative, programmatic and budgetary operations of the Mayor’s Office and ensures strategic alignment within each of the city’s 23 departments.
Hunter has more than 20 years experience in public policy, city and regional planning, real estate development and finance. She has extensive knowledge of federal, state and local programs to support housing, economic development, transportation and public infrastructure.
With a unique combination of experience in both the public and private sectors, Hunter serves the city well by focusing on maximized effectiveness and increased productivity. Hunter previously served as president and chief executive officer at 3D Visions Planning Consultants, LLC, a planning and development firm she founded in 2001 specializing in multifamily tax credit and bond financed transactions, transportation infrastructure and master planned communities.
Hunter’s prior public sector experience includes positions as chief operating officer for the Harris County Housing Authority, project manager for the Houston Housing and Community Development Department and planner for the Houston Planning Department.
Hunter holds a Master of Regional Planning from Cornell University and a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Florida A and M University. She serves on the board of directors of the Near Northwest Management District and previously served on the Texas Commission on Jail Standards, the Texas Affordable Housing Task Force and Mayor Turner’s Transition Team. She is also the author of the “Faith Based Affordable Housing Development and Finance Resource Guide” published by the Fannie Mae Foundation.
Hunter is the first African American female to hold the position of Mayor’s Chief of Staff. She is married to Newal Hunter, PhD and they have two children, Austin Chandler and Victoria Grace.
