Melanie Wilcox Miles

Melanie Wilcox Miles is a board-certified family law attorney who has served the citizens of Harris County for over 25 years. She is a native of Houston, Texas, and grew up in the Third Ward and Braeswood areas. After graduating from Bellaire High School, she went on to obtain a bachelor’s degree from Howard University and a Juris Doctorate degree from South Texas College of Law Houston.

Ms. Miles is a member of the American Bar Association, State Bar of Texas, the Houston Bar Association, the Texas Family Law Section, and the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. She is among the 1% of Texas lawyers who are board-certified. For most of her career, Ms. Miles has been a fierce advocate and respected trial attorney with a practice focused on complex family law litigation, including custody and divorces. She has owned and operated a boutique family law firm since 1998. She served for many years on the faculty of the esteemed American Bar Association Family Law Trial Institute, during which she and some of the most talented family lawyers and judges from around the country taught other lawyers how to try family law cases. She has been a sought-after speaker at State Bar of Texas Family Law Conferences and for the American Bar Association Real Estate Section.

She has served a myriad of causes that impact and empower the lives of everyday Houstonians particularly in the area of equal justice under the law and social justice. She is a vocal advocate for domestic violence victims and assisting underserved communities navigate the legal system.

Ms. Miles has served her community as a passionate advocate, in multiple leadership roles and on municipal and nonprofit boards. She currently serves as the chair of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Civil Service Commission where she oversees the disciplinary appeals of Sheriff’s officers and employees. Ms. Miles is the first African American woman to serve on the Commission and as its Chair. Under her leadership the Commission has appointed its first African American Director, and for the first time, truly represents the diversity of Houston with Asian, Hispanic, Anglo, and African American Commissioners.

Ms. Miles also enjoys her role as an entrepreneur and real estate developer, with over 30 years of experience in developing and renovating residential property.

Ms. Miles is the proud mother of two children; Justus, a pre-law student at University of Houston and Faith, a pre-med student at University of Texas.
