Lisa Trapani Shumate, MBA

Lisa Trapani Shumate was appointed Associate Vice President (UH System) & General Manager, Houston Public Media (UH) in 2011, with dual roles of responsibility including serving as Executive Director of the Houston Public Media Foundation. Lisa is responsible for raising funds for and managing an operational budget of $23 million, as well as strategically positioning the following top-ranked nationally renowned media assets: TV 8, the first educational television station, KUHF News 88.7, the largest news radio audience in Texas, and 88.7 HD-2, a high definition radio devoted to classical programming.
A proven media executive with a track record encompassing more than 20 years of top 7 market-leading performance, her experience spans all aspects of multi-media leadership vision, including surpassing sales and capital funding projections on a year-over-year basis, building key alliances, developing new revenue streams of support, as well as increasing target audience growth and digital metrics performance of effective content management across all media platforms.
Her business strengths are knowledge of efficiencies surrounding mergers and effective change management methodology, execution and actionable metrics. Prior to joining the University, she held successive roles of executive leadership at KHOU-TV (TEGNA), BELO Corporation (TEGNA) and KTRK-TV (Disney/ABC) in both Houston and Dallas.
Through her collaborative partnerships with federal, state and local agencies, peer affiliate organizations and the corporate sector, Houston Public Media has become a national public safety leader supporting first responders on a national scale with vital communications assets through innovative life-saving datacasting technology.
Appointed to the national PBS Board of Directors in 2015, she currently serves as Vice Chair. She is also a member of the PBS Foundation Board and serves on its Endowment Fund Committee. In addition, she is a member of the Executive Women’s Partnership affiliate of the Greater Houston Partnership, and is the Chair of the Public Television Major Market Group Board of Directors.
Honored with the 2018 Award for Public Service by the Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, she is a long-time ambassador and community advocate and has been honored as the recipient of national and regional awards for community service, including a recipient of the Media Alliance of Houston Star Award TV Market Manager (2017-2019), America’s Public Television Stations Pillar of Broadcasting Award (2017), Secured Cities Innovation Award (2015), American Marketing Association’s Crystal Award (2014, 2016), Lone Star Regional Emmy (2010), Leadership Houston Community Award (2009), Lone Star Emmy Public Affairs (2002) and the American Women in Radio and Television Gracie Award (1998).
She earned a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Houston-Bauer College of Business, graduating cum laude, and participated in an International Business Residency in China. She also holds a Bachelor of Science Arts degree in Communications from Loyola University, New Orleans, Louisiana.
