Rosie Nguyen

Rosie Nguyen is an Emmy award-winning journalist and the race and culture reporter at ABC13 Houston (KTRK-TV). Her passion lies in covering issues impacting our diverse communities and highlighting their contributions to society with the hope of combating harmful stereotypes.

She moved to Houston in 2021 and has loved calling the Bayou City her home. During her time here, she’s reported about a myriad of topics, including how new Texas voting laws disproportionately impact communities of color, the environmental inequities that cause health issues for minority neighborhoods, and how recent legislation has created hostile conditions for families with transgender children.

But don’t worry, she gets to cover positive stories too. She followed R’Bonney Gabriel’s journey after she won Miss Texas USA, who ultimately won Miss Universe 2022. She was the only TV news reporter from Houston to interview Second Chief Millie Thompson Williams, the first woman to hold a chief position for the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas. She also featured Rev. Doris Benford of Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church in Texas City, who holds the Guinness World Record for the longest-serving pastor of a single church, two months before he died.

Rosie comes to Houston from her hometown of Salt Lake City, where she helped launch the market’s first live nightly news discussion show during the 7 p.m. hour. As the anchor and host of “In Focus,” she explored various topics of community interest, such as racial equity, LGBTQ+ issues, disability rights, intergenerational poverty, mental health, and more.

During her time in Utah, she won multiple awards, including a 2021 Rocky Mountain Regional Emmy in the Breaking News category as an anchor during the destructive George Floyd riots. She’s also won several first-place awards with the Utah Society of Professional Journalists in the categories of criminal justice, minority issues, and general news reporting.

She graduated from the University of Utah with a master’s degree in communications and began her news career as the weekend morning anchor for KEZI in Eugene, Oregon. Rosie is the daughter of two Vietnam War refugees and speaks Vietnamese fluently. She and her boyfriend, Jason, are excited to live in a city with one of the largest Vietnamese populations in the country. They have a Labrador Retriever, Dug, who loves to venture the outdoors with them. If you have any recommendations for good places to eat or places to explore, please send them her way!
