Sara Lujan Donatto

Sara Lujan Donatto serves as the Assistant Vice Chancellor and Assistant Vice President for Local Relations and Strategic Initiatives at the University of Houston System, where she leads the operational strategy and community relations efforts for the Department of Government and Community Relations. With nearly two decades of higher education experience and extensive leadership expertise, she has played a key role in the department’s significant growth and evolution.

Under Donatto’s leadership, the department has expanded its footprint in Houston, launched its Washington, D.C. office, and strengthened its presence at the local, state, and national levels. Most notably, alongside the Executive Steering Committee, she led the University of Houston’s successful effort to earn the prestigious Carnegie Elective Classification for Community Engagement, recognizing the University’s deep commitment to community partnerships.

Donatto oversees departmental operations across Houston, Austin, and Washington, D.C., while partnering with community relations leaders throughout the UH System to align strategies and maximize impact. She also leads the strategic vision and operations of the Judy Cook Building, positioning it as a premier community engagement hub for the University.

Guided by her belief that successful partnerships are built on reciprocity, Donatto founded the Community Relations Alliance (CRA) in 2022, bringing together faculty and staff engaged in community outreach to share best practices, strengthen collaboration, and advance institutional impact.

Known for navigating operational complexity while cultivating meaningful community relationships, Donatto has led numerous university-wide initiatives that advance the missions of both the department and the University.

Committed to continuous growth, Donatto is a graduate of Leadership Houston (Class XLI) and the Governor’s Executive Development Program at the University of Texas LBJ School. Her leadership has been recognized with numerous honors, including Texas Executive Women’s 2024 Woman on the Move, the 2025 Female Executive Award from the East End Chamber of Commerce, and recognition by Houston Woman Magazine as one of Houston’s 50 Most Influential Women of 2025. She serves on the Board of Directors for the East End Chamber of Commerce and several other Houston-area organizations and remains active in the Junior League of Houston, Child Advocates, and mentoring emerging leaders.

Donatto earned both her BBA and Executive MBA from Sam Houston State University and proudly considers herself an honorary UH System alumna after more than a decade of dedicated service. She and her husband, Adam, are the proud parents of two sons, Alec and Amir, and their beloved boxer, Juan Carlos.
